We think the high street and expensive designer brands give consumers a raw deal. That's because everyone along the way takes a cut, from agents to landlords. And you - our discerning customer - pay for that cut. So we're making a stand: taking on the high street to offer you original furniture design at affordable prices. Here's how we do it differently:

Description

SUMMARY

Immanuel Nobel, father of Alfred, invented plywood. By gluing several sheets of veneer together, he realised you could have a material stronger and more stable than wooden boards. It’s been used in everything from building and medical accessories to domestic furniture. Designers Charles and Ray Eames also used plywood to pioneer methods of mass production, creating some of the most iconic plywood pieces of the 20th century.
To be in with a chance of winning the 2017 Emerging Talent Award, we’d like you to design something with a material that inspires you. Your design could be made of your chosen material, or, it could be the material’s appearance, history or manufacture that influence your design.

WHO SHOULD ENTER

We welcome designers and creatives who consider themselves emerging professionals. You don't necessarily need a degree, just a great design. Maybe you're making and selling your own products already - as long as they're not produced or licensed to a third party, you're welcome to enter.

WHAT YOU SHOULD SUBMIT

Your entry should fit in with the categories we already have on our website i.e. lighting, furniture, upholstery, textiles and accessories. Take a look at our products to get a feel for the materials and techniques we currently use. Each submission should feature one product, but you're welcome to submit more than once.

WHAT YOU SHOULDN'T SUBMIT

We won't accept collections, although a variety of colour or material options for a single product will be accepted. Also, avoid products with moulded plastics, moulded foams for upholstery, chrome finishes, or metal sheets that require moulding.

USEFUL TIPS

STYLE: There are no constraints on style. But keep in mind the typical MADE customer.

PRICE: Making high-end design accessible is important to us. Our prices reflect this and so should your target price.

JUDGING CRITERIA: Your design will be judged on how accurately it fits the brief. We'll also be taking into account the originality, feasibility, aesthetics, functionality, efficient use of materials, commerciality and, most of all, compliance with the MADE.COM brand

THE AWARD

This is no ordinary prize. The winner will have their piece produced and sold on MADE.COM within 12 months and, we'll publicise their design to our customers. The exposure, not to mention the royalties, could potentially be life-changing for a fledgling designer. It's an extraordinary opportunity for anyone hoping to kick-start their career.

THE SMALL PRINT

Participation is free of charge and open to all fledgling designers and creative talents, aged 18 years or older. Participants can present one or more pieces, but no collections. Only the designs published on the Emerging Talent Award vote page will be accepted.
