Praxis Gallery and Photographic Arts Center is a community based arts organization that aims to support the development of emerging and established photographers. Praxis Gallery provides solo and group show exhibition opportunities to local and international media artists. Praxis Photographic Arts Center offers a range of learning opportunities for beginning, intermediate and professional photographers through workshops and seminars. With an emphasis on creative expression and innovation, Praxis promotes photographic exhibitions and learning opportunities that inform, challenge and engage the individual artist, with an imperative on promoting the work of our artists to local and international audiences.

THEME | AFTER DARK
“Night does not show things, it suggests them. It disturbs and surprises us with its strangeness. It liberates forces within us which are dominated by our reason during the daytime.” ― Brassai
Spanning two centuries, night photography has captured the collective imagination of the masses. From the infamously long exposures required by early artists, to high speed color films and the advent of digital technology, the subject of the night has inspired an explosion of interest among contemporary artists. Natural vistas, celestial bodies, urban landscapes, factories, artificial structures and nocturnal interludes represent but a few of the limitless subjects of nighttime photography.
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic works that explore the fundamental qualities that make night photography - from dusk to dawn - a compelling contemporary art form. All subjects (people, places and things), genres, capture types, color, black & white, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.
JUROR | LAYNE KENNEDY
Layne Kennedy is known for his editorial photography that conveys a strong sense of place. His images are featured in magazines worldwide on subjects as varied as the streets of Havana to the Pink Dolphins of the Amazon River. Layne has published numerous books of his photography and his work is featured in Smithsonian, LIFE, Audubon, Islands, Sports Illustrated, Terre Sauvage, Nature Conservancy, Newsweek , National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Outdoor Explorer, and other magazines. A frequent speaker at events and workshops, Layne has been teaching photography for more than 25 years. He currently teaches with the Worldwide Mentor Treks, North House Folk School, Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge and his own worldwide photo tours - including tours to Italy, Iceland and Kenya. ACCEPTANCE | AWARDS
Forty-two images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. A Juror’s Choice, Directors Choice, and three Honorable Mentions will be awarded and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog and the online show gallery. Award winners will receive a free show catalog. Artists selected for Juror’s Choice & Directors Choice awards will receive free entry into three juried calls-for-entry of their choice. Artists selected for Honorable Mention will receive free entry into one juried call for entry of their choice.
ENTRY FEE | $35.00
The submission fee for entry is $35.00 for the first five images and $5.00 for each additional image. Payment is accepted by Credit / Debit Card through our secure online submission site.
USE RIGHTS
Artist retains all copyrights to their own images. The artist's name and photo title will be included wherever the photographs are displayed. Artists whose photographs are accepted for exhibition grant Praxis Gallery the nonexclusive right to use submitted photographs for exhibition purposes and for the purpose of marketing the exhibition, marketing related programs and subsequent display on Praxis Gallery's website.
