Description
A HOUSE FOR AUGUSTE RODINNow, that there will be 100 years since his death, on November 17th.
Some might think that Rodin belongs to the XIXth century.
Wrong.
As if great art belongs to a certain age and that's it.
If we are not afraid of the word "eternal," then we can easily say: art is eternal.
Just as the human soul is eternal.
Just as human suffering and struggles are eternal.
And just as the quest to give life a meaning is eternal.
Rodin was great!
And we like to imagine that we can commemorate him through architecture as well.
Maybe his house would not be a "house," per se, but a cathedral, since he loved so much the great French Cathedrals.
One could very well say that the artist, today, has no business at all with God and all that nonsense.
But Rodin felt and thought differently, otherwise he would not have adored the French Gothic.
And he would not have been able to intertwine so delicately those two loving hands, creating, thus, just with and through them, une cathedrale.
How many of us, today, feel and think in these terms ?
How many of us, just like Bach and Ingmar Bergman, feel tempted to sign their works with those both reverent and highly ambitious letters: S.D.G. (Soli Deo Gloria)...? (To God Alone the Glory).
We must be joking, of course... what architect, today, would have the nerve to place these three initials on his or her working drawings ?
But you can tell that Rodin searched for God, just as Bach did and just as Ingmar Bergman did.
Maybe they didn't quite believe, at least Rodin and Bergman, but they had THE DESIRE FOR FAITH.
And maybe this DESIRE is all that matters, even if faith, per se, is not reached, or present.
The immense output of Rodin can be, and is, overwhelming. One could easily get sick of so many Rodins, everywhere in this world.
Yet, above this potential sickness, resides the immensity of the goal... to reach God, even in the most sensuous drawings. To reach the mystery of life that made and makes everything possible.
That the artist is a sinner is obvious. But we owe to these sublime sinners that zest for life without which, indeed, life could be quite miserable.
